Build the identity file

Safe research sequence

  1. Inspect without charging, opening, crushing, or testing a questionable battery.
  2. Check manufacturer recalls and obtain rated data for the exact model.
  3. Classify the physical configuration as it will actually travel.

Do not tape terminals, remove a battery, substitute a random container, or apply a lithium mark solely because an online checklist says so. A required mark can have exact design and placement criteria.

Do not place loose cells with metal tools, coins, keys, or other batteries. Do not conceal a battery inside a product description. If a retailer supplies a return kit or label, confirm it matches the actual condition; a label for an undamaged product may not cover a damaged return.

Immediate stop checklist

  • Swelling, heat, odor, leakage, puncture, crushing, corrosion, or exposed conductors.
  • Device or battery is under recall or described as damaged or defective.
  • Chemistry, rating, configuration, or manufacturer cannot be verified.
  • International destination or air/surface eligibility is unresolved.

Worked scenario comparison

A new laptop with its original battery installed, a spare loose battery, and a used phone with a swollen battery are three different scenarios. They cannot share one generic answer. The laptop requires research as contained-in equipment; the spare is standalone; the swollen phone is a safety stop and needs manufacturer or local hazardous-waste guidance, not ordinary mailing. Remove nothing merely to force all three into one category.

Merchant return programs need the same matrix

A prepaid return label is evidence of a proposed shipment, not proof that the merchant knows the battery’s present condition. Tell the merchant about swelling, impact, water exposure, heat, recall, or defect through a known support channel. Request a condition-specific return or local disposal route. Keep the response and label together so an ordinary-label workflow is not mistakenly applied by another household member.
